    Roll-In Showers

A roll-in shower is a curbless, barrier-free shower large enough to accommodate a shower wheelchair or wheeled shower bench. ADA guidelines specify a minimum 36″x36″ clear floor space for a roll-in shower, though 60″x30″ or larger is standard for wheelchair transfer. Roll-in showers require:

    • Zero-threshold entry — no curb, no ramp, no step of any kind
    • Continuous, slip-resistant tile surface with slope toward the drain
    • Clear floor space for wheelchair positioning and transfer
    • Properly positioned drain — typically at the far end or side, not centered
    • Reinforced walls for grab bar installation (current or future)
    • Shower controls positioned within ADA-compliant reach range (15″–48″ from floor)

    Grab Bar Installation

ADA grab bars must be anchored into structural blocking — not drywall or even standard studs at the wrong location. Improperly installed grab bars fail under load, which can cause a fall worse than the one you’re trying to prevent. We install grab bars correctly: into blocking or solid wood backing, at ADA-compliant heights and angles.

    • Shower entry/exit bar: horizontal at 33″–36″ AFF, or angled 30°–40°
    • Shower interior control bar: horizontal near shower valve
    • Toilet flanking bars: side wall bar at 42″ minimum length, 33″–36″ AFF
    • Optional: fold-down grab bar for flexible use configurations
    • Finishes: matte black, brushed nickel, brushed gold — bars that look intentional, not institutional

    Transfer Showers

Transfer showers are designed specifically for users who transfer from a wheelchair to a shower seat. ADA specifications call for a 36″x36″ minimum with a fold-down or fixed seat at one end, clear floor space for wheelchair positioning, and grab bars for the transfer. We build transfer showers to these specifications with tile and glass that matches the overall bathroom design.

    Wheelchair-Accessible Vanity

Standard vanities are too high for a seated user and too closed underneath for knee clearance. An accessible vanity is wall-mounted at a lower height (typically 34″ maximum to top of counter), with open knee clearance underneath (minimum 27″ high, 30″ wide, 19″ deep). We install accessible vanity configurations with coordinated plumbing, countertop, and finish selections.

    Wider Doorway

ADA standard for a wheelchair-accessible doorway is 32″ clear width (36″ rough opening). Many older San Antonio homes have 28″–30″ bathroom doorways that cannot accommodate a wheelchair or walker without structural modification. We assess doorway widening feasibility — including impact on adjacent walls and framing — during the free in-home assessment.

    Comfort-Height and ADA Toilet

Standard toilets (15″ floor to seat) require significant knee and hip flexion that becomes difficult or painful with limited mobility. Comfort-height toilets (17″–19″) dramatically reduce this demand. ADA-compliant toilet placement also specifies clear floor space on the transfer side and specific distances from walls. We handle toilet replacement and repositioning as needed.

    Non-Slip Flooring

Bathroom floors must have appropriate slip resistance when wet — especially in a roll-in shower where the entire floor is a wet zone. We select tile with the appropriate slip resistance rating (DCOF ≥ 0.42 for wet floors) and install with proper slope and anti-slip surface texture. This is a safety specification, not just a preference.

ADA & Roll-In Bathroom Remodeling: FAQ

What is the difference between a roll-in shower and a walk-in shower?

A walk-in shower is any shower without a traditional curb — typically designed for ambulatory users who want an open, modern aesthetic. A roll-in shower is specifically designed to accommodate a wheelchair or wheeled shower chair, requiring minimum clear dimensions, specific drain placement, and controls within reach range of a seated user. All roll-in showers are walk-in showers, but not all walk-in showers meet roll-in specifications.

Private residential bathrooms are not legally required to meet ADA standards — ADA primarily applies to commercial and public accommodations. However, building to ADA specifications is the recognized best practice for accessible residential design, and we use ADA dimensions as our guide for all accessibility projects because they’re based on extensive usability research.

In most cases, yes — though the extent of modification depends on the existing footprint, door width, and plumbing layout. Some bathrooms can accommodate a roll-in shower within the existing footprint; others require removing a wall or relocating plumbing to create adequate clear floor space. We assess your specific bathroom during the free in-home visit.

Grab bar installation and minor fixture upgrades can often be completed within 1–2 weeks of consultation. A full roll-in shower conversion or comprehensive accessible bathroom renovation takes the same timeline as any remodel — typically 4–8 weeks including material selection, permitting, and construction.
