Walk-In Shower Styles We Design & Build
Walk-in showers come in many configurations — what’s right for you depends on your bathroom’s footprint, your door swing clearance, and the look you want. Here are the styles we build most often in San Antonio:

Frameless Glass Walk-In Shower
The benchmark for modern bathroom design. Frameless tempered glass panels with minimal hardware — no aluminum frame, no bottom track. The result is an unobstructed view of your tile work, a bathroom that reads as larger, and glass that’s dramatically easier to keep clean. Available as a single fixed panel with pivot door, full enclosure with multiple panels, or a partially open walk-in layout.
- Best for: master bathrooms where visual openness is the priority
- Glass options: clear, ultra-clear (low-iron), or subtle tint
- Hardware finishes: matte black, brushed nickel, brushed gold, polished chrome

Open Walk-In Shower (Doorless)
In a footprint large enough — typically 42″ wide or more — a walk-in shower can be designed without any door at all. A fixed glass panel or a short knee wall provides splash control, while the shower itself remains completely open. This is the closest thing to a resort-style shower experience available in a residential bathroom.
- Requires 42″+ width and careful drain and showerhead placement
- Easiest configuration to maintain — no door hinges, no glass to squeegee on both sides
- Works beautifully with a linear drain for a completely seamless floor

Curbless (Zero-Entry) Walk-In Shower
A curbless shower eliminates the threshold entirely. The bathroom floor transitions seamlessly into the shower floor with a subtle slope toward the drain. The result is a clean, continuous surface that makes the entire bathroom feel larger, eliminates a trip hazard, and is the right choice for aging-in-place planning. Can be combined with any glass configuration.

Corner Walk-In Shower
For bathrooms where a full-width walk-in isn’t possible, a corner configuration — typically 36″x36″ to 42″x48″ — maximizes a tight footprint while still delivering an open, modern shower. Neo-angle glass enclosures with a pivot door are common for corner showers where door swing clearance is limited.
Wet Room
A wet room takes the open shower concept further — the entire bathroom floor is waterproofed and drained, with no glass enclosure at all. Wet rooms are a popular design choice in master bathrooms with sufficient square footage, and they create an exceptionally open, spa-like feel. They require precise waterproofing and drainage design — not a project for inexperienced contractors.

Walk-In Shower Features & Customization
Tile Selection
The tile defines your shower’s character. Large-format porcelain (24″x24″ or 24″x48″) is our most-recommended choice for San Antonio homes — it minimizes grout lines, which matters enormously in our hard-water environment, and is available in virtually every style: concrete-look, marble-look, warm stone, textured, and polished finishes.
Built-In Niches
Recessed niches eliminate wire caddies and give your shower a clean, intentional look. We build single or double horizontal niches, tiled to match or contrast the surround, with properly waterproofed corners and an optional LED strip light inside for a premium detail.
Shower Bench
A built-in tiled bench — full-width or L-shaped — adds both comfort and accessibility. Fold-down teak or tiled benches are available for homeowners who want the option without permanently reducing floor space.
Drain Options
Standard center-point drain with mosaic tile floor, or linear drain flush with large-format tile for a seamless floor appearance. Linear drains require precise slope work — we plan drain placement during the design phase, not after tile is ordered.
Multi-Function Shower Systems
Wall-mount showerhead, rain head, hand shower on slide bar, or body spray panel — in any combination. Thermostatic valve systems allow precise temperature control and can activate multiple outputs independently. We help you choose the right valve and fixture package for your design.

We first worked with David and Melina a few years back when their team assisted with correcting another company’s renovation mistakes. We were very pleased with the final outcome which made it an easy choice to go with Bath By Design for our next project.
When we first started thinking about updating our fireplace, we knew we wanted something more modern, efficient, and low-maintenance than our old gas setup…

Sherry Friedman
Bath By Design SA did a great job on our bath remodel. From a garden tub and stall shower to a luxurious walk-in shower. They are professional in their approach and ensure the plan in place is exactly what the customer wants. Contractors used throughout the project do quality work and David consistently checks progress. We love our new shower!

Wendy Tiemann
“I wanted a soaking tub for quite a while. Bath by Design SA made my dream come true. David and his team met all my expectations. His crew worked diligently from start to finish, they were professional and courteous during the entire process. They took great care by covering my floor, furniture and cleaned up before they left for the day. If you’re looking to remodel your bathroom I highly recommend Bath by Design SA. The first two are before pics the rest are after.”

Walk-In Showers San Antonio: FAQ
What is the minimum size for a walk-in shower?
The minimum comfortable walk-in shower is 36″x36″, though 36″x48″ is noticeably more comfortable for daily use. If you’re converting a standard tub alcove (60″ wide), the resulting shower footprint is significantly larger than any standard shower stall — most clients find the converted space surprisingly spacious.
Are walk-in showers hard to keep clean?
Walk-in showers with large-format tile and frameless glass are significantly easier to maintain than traditional tub/shower combos with framed doors and small tile. The key habits: squeegee the glass after every shower (30 seconds), apply a hydrophobic coating to the glass every 30–60 days, and clean tile weekly with a non-acidic cleaner. In San Antonio’s hard-water environment, these habits make a real difference.
Can I add a bench to my walk-in shower?
Yes. Built-in tiled benches can be incorporated into most walk-in shower designs. If space is tight, fold-down options are available. We recommend planning the bench during the design phase — retrofitting a bench into a completed shower requires partial demolition.
How long does walk-in shower installation take?
Most walk-in shower builds take 5–8 business days from demo to final walkthrough. Larger or more complex projects — extensive custom tile layouts, linear drains, ceiling-height glass — may take 8–12 days. We provide a specific timeline before work begins.
