What Happens During a Bath by Design SA Design Consultation
Our design consultation isn’t a sales pitch. It’s a working session in your bathroom where we assess what you have, discuss what you want, and develop a real plan — before any commitment is made. Here’s what we cover:
Space Assessment & Layout Planning
We start by understanding what isn’t working about your current bathroom. Too cramped? Shower in the wrong location? Vanity that cuts off the door? We measure the space precisely and evaluate what’s possible given your plumbing, structural, and footprint constraints.
For homeowners considering layout changes — moving the shower, replacing a tub, reconfiguring the vanity — we sketch proposed alternatives on-site and explain the plumbing implications of each option. This gives you informed choices rather than contractor assumptions.
Tile Selection (Samples Brought to Your Home)
We bring physical tile samples — not photos, not a catalog, not a QR code to a website. Real tile samples in the formats and styles that make sense for your specific bathroom. You place them against your walls, look at them under your bathroom lighting, and feel the surface finish. This is the only reliable way to make tile selections you’ll be happy with long-term.
We typically bring:
- 3–5 large-format porcelain options based on your style preference (modern, transitional, traditional, earthy, clean/minimalist)
- 2–3 floor tile options in appropriate slip-resistance for your shower design
- Accent and niche tile options to complement the primary selections
- Grout samples in colors that work with your tile choice
Fixture & Hardware Finish Selection
Shower valve, showerhead, hand shower, faucets, towel bars, hooks, toilet paper holder — all need to be in coordinated finishes to create a cohesive result. We help you navigate finish options:
- Modern, fingerprint-resistant, pairs with both warm and cool tile palettes Matte black:
- Versatile, neutral, works in traditional and transitional designs Brushed nickel:
- Warm, organic, pairs with cream, warm white, and earth-tone tiles Brushed gold / satin brass:
- Classic, pairs well with very clean white or gray tile Polished chrome:
We also discuss whether mixing metals is appropriate for your design — done intentionally, mixing two finishes (e.g., matte black plumbing + brushed gold mirror frame) is a current design trend; done accidentally, it looks unplanned.
Glass Enclosure Style & Hardware
Frameless pivot door, sliding panels, fixed walk-in panel, or fully open doorless shower — we explain the functional and aesthetic implications of each option for your specific footprint and help you choose the glass thickness, type, and hardware finish that works best.
Vanity, Countertop & Mirror Selection
If your remodel includes a new vanity, we discuss cabinetry style (shaker, flat-front, furniture-style), configuration (single, double, floating), countertop material (quartz, marble, porcelain, solid surface), sink style (undermount, vessel, integrated), and mirror options (frameless, LED-framed, medicine cabinet).
Lighting Plan
Bathroom lighting is frequently an afterthought — and the results show. We discuss vanity lighting (important for makeup and grooming tasks), overhead lighting, exhaust fan placement, and any accent lighting (LED niche strips, toe-kick lighting, recessed in-shower lighting) that fits your design.
Design Renderings (When Needed)
For projects involving significant layout changes or multiple design decisions, we can provide visual design previews — hand sketches or digital concept layouts — that help you see the proposed design in context before construction begins. This eliminates the most common source of mid-project regret: realizing during installation that something looks different than you expected.
Why the Design & Selection Phase Determines the Project's Success
In our 30+ years of bathroom remodeling in San Antonio, the projects that turn out best are the ones where design decisions were made carefully before demo day. The projects that encounter problems — mid-construction changes, unhappy clients, cost overruns — almost always trace back to rushed selections or inadequate planning.
Changes are free before ordering. They’re expensive after.
Changing your mind about a tile during the design phase costs nothing. Changing your mind after 400 square feet of tile has been ordered — even before it’s installed — typically costs $800–$3,000 in restocking fees and delays. Changing it after it’s been installed is a full demo and restart.
Samples in your bathroom are the only reliable way to choose tile.
Tile looks dramatically different in a showroom (large, bright, standardized lighting) versus a real bathroom (smaller, your specific wall color, your specific light fixture). Clients who choose tile from a catalog photo or a showroom visit regularly find that the tile looks completely different in their bathroom. Physical samples under your actual lighting is the standard we hold ourselves to.
A good design makes construction go faster.
When every selection is finalized before demo day — tile, glass, fixtures, vanity — our installation team can work without interruption. Projects stall when decisions haven’t been made and materials haven’t been ordered. The design phase is where that efficiency is built.

Bathroom Design & Selections: FAQ
Is the design consultation really free?
Yes, completely. The in-home design consultation — including the time we spend measuring, showing samples, discussing layout, and sketching options — is free and carries no obligation. We do charge for standalone design services (if you want a design document without intending to hire us for construction), but the initial consultation is always free.
What should I prepare before the consultation?
Nothing is required, but it helps to have: a rough sense of your budget range, any inspiration images you’ve collected (Pinterest, Houzz, magazine photos), a list of what frustrates you most about your current bathroom, and any accessibility needs or preferences to discuss. The more context you give us upfront, the more productive the consultation will be.
How long does the design process take before construction begins?
Most clients finalize their selections within 1–3 weeks of the initial consultation. The design phase timeline depends on how quickly you can make decisions and how long material lead times are for your selections. We don’t rush the design phase — it’s the most important investment of time in the entire project.
Can you work with a design I already have?
Yes. If you’ve done design work with an interior designer, pulled together a complete selections board, or have a very clear vision of what you want, we build from that. We assess feasibility of the design in your specific bathroom and advise on any adjustments needed based on your plumbing, structural conditions, or material availability.
